(9-5-23) Allen County (Indiana) prosecutors on August 25th charged Adam C. Gray (32) Ft. Wayne with one Level 6 felony count of theft (theft where value of property is between $750 & $50k), which can carry a sentence of between six months and two-and-a-half years in jail.

Gray had access to the Heritage (Indiana) High School basketball team’s bank account while he was the head coach at the school for the past five seasons. In April, Gray announced he was leaving Heritage and that he had been hired to coach the Bluffton (Indiana) basketball team. Two months later he would resign from Bluffton citing personal reasons.

Gray is accused of using the account’s one debit card to make various purchases for himself from November 2022 to April 2023. Gray is accused of using a total of $5,593.52 from the account for personal use.

An investigator asked Gray if he could account for these purchases, and Gray said in court documents he didn’t know if he could. The investigator would then go through Gray’s bank statements with Gray present.

Some of the money in the transactions included one to the Celina (Ohio) Lynx Golf, he made additional transactions at Sports Clips and Great Clips. Gray also used the debit card for a transaction at Kelley Automotive. Gary also used the account to give money to a person at a casino with the assumption that person would pay him back…he never did.

Gray also wrote two checks… $2,000 that went to his mother for payment for a vacation and a check for $2,000 to his wife that he claimed was for reimbursement for items purchased for the team.

When asked if he had receipts for these items, Gray replied with a simple “no”.

Gray was booked into the Allen County Jail shortly after a warrant was filed for his arrest and he has since been released. He is due back in Allen County Superior Court on October 25th at 9:30 AM .
