1965-66 Mendon-Union Pirates

(12-8-23) High school basketball was a lot different in the 1960’s…wide open offense, cracker box gyms and a different style of defense.

Mendon-Union students now attend Parkway…but the Pirates strong basketball heritage is kept alive in the OHSAA record books. They are listed twice in the Ohio record books for the Most Points Scored, Game both teams..both against Grover Hill…once in 1964 and the other in 1966.

During the 1965-66 season they would score 100 points a total of three times…and gave up 100 points twice.

Howell and Welch

Mendon-Union’s Bob Howell scored 36 points and Grover Hill’s Al Welch had 60 points. in the OT win by the Pirates 112-111 in 1966.

By the way there was no 3-point line in the 1960’s.

Welch would go on to coach and is a member of the Ohio Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. As a head coach for 33 years at Wayne Trace , he won 72.2% of those games…the Raiders won 22 Green Meadow Conference titles, 18 sectional titles, 8 district titles, 2 regional runners-up, 4 regional titles, 3 State Final Four appearances (1987, 2001, 2008) and the State Title in 1991.
