(8-6-24) The Barrow (Alaska) Whalers football team will kick-off the 2024 season on the road on August 16th against the West Valley Wolfpack in Fairbanks.

The two schools are approximately 502 miles apart. But that is nothing new for the Whalers. Even when they play a home game it is an exciting adventure for the traveling visiting team.

Barrow has a story to tell about their turf football field that is above the Arctic Circle…the Whalers love their football. The expenses incurred in travel by both the Whalers on their road trips and the visitors to visit Utqiagvik is a testimony for Barrow’s love for football.

Last season Kenai Central beat Barrow 20-8 for the Alaska Division III State Title at Service High School in Anchorage.

Kenai Central (8-2 overall) won their seventh state championship and first since 2011, while the Whalers finished 6-3 and failed to add to their lone state title back in 2017…the Whalers have lost in a state final for the fourth time.

This quote sums up why the Whalers continue to play despite the travel and expenses every year-

Mike Singletary

“Do you want to know what my favorite part of the game is? The opportunity to play.”
