(8-20-24) The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) looked to revolutionize the game of basketball with its latest decision to introduce a four-point shot this season, making it the first professional 5-on-5 league in the world to implement such a rule.

The PBA four-point line, will be positioned 27 feet away from the rim.

The three point line used today-

The NBA has a 22-foot 3-point line in the corners and a 23-foot, 9-inch line elsewhere. The WNBA and the international game plays with a 20-foot, 6-inch line. The NCAA men’s game has a 20-foot, 9-inch line while the NCAA women and high schools have a 19-foot, 9-inch line.

Why…the implementation of the four-point shot is expected to encourage more perimeter play, increase the pace of the game, and create more thrilling moments on the court.

Every sport over the years has had major rule changes…many would say the 3-point FG line made the highest impact on the sport of basketball.

Not every coach was excited about the new rule.

When the 3-point FG was implemented in high school basketball…a very successful Ohio boys basketball coach known for his slow style of basketball and good defense, Jack Albers of Marion Local, is said to have said to his team at their first practice—

Pointing to the new 3 point line in the gym…

‘See that line, its not there.’

Eyes will be on the PBA…but like other new rule changes in the past years only time will tell.

The American Basketball League played one full season, 1961–1962, and approximately one-third of the next season until the league folded on December 31, 1962. The ABL was the first basketball league to have a three-point field goal for shots attempted from longer distance. Other rules that set the league apart from the National Basketball Association (NBA) were a 30-second shooting clock, as opposed to 24, and a wider free throw lane of 18 feet instead of the NBA’s then-standard 12.
