(9-4-24) Last night in Western Buckeye League (WBL) girls soccer action Celina beat Van Wert 25-0. The Cougars (according to MaxPreps) are 0-5 on the season…they have lost to Coldwater 19-0, Crestview 11-1, Lima Senior 9-0 and Delphos Jefferson 18-0. For all five matches they have been outscored 82-1.
Last season (according to MaxPreps) they were shut-out in every match. All but two of those matches the opposition scored 10 or more goals.
The current consecutive game losing streak (according to MaxPreps) is 39. The last win came against Delphos St. John’s in September of 2021 beating the Blue Jays 1-0.
Last night’s win did raise some eyebrows by some soccer fans, for the Van Wert athletic department solving the problem doesn’t seem to be in site. It has to be difficult for this program to suffer through this game after game, season after season.
Opposing coaches also face a moral dilemma…when do you stop scoring goals, do you tell your bench players to not try and score, etc. It is a tough decision on both sides of the field.
An Ohio high school basketball coach when asked why he pulled back and didn’t run up the score….
The kids on the other team have parents who have feeling for their children just like our team, I wouldn’t want our parents to go through that and embarrass those players by running up the score.
Over the years…(according to MaxPreps)
23-24 – 0-16
22-23 – 0-14
21-22 – 1-14 Beat Delphos St. John’s 9/25/21 1-0

19-20 – 1-8-1

Running up the score while up 70-10
Football is the only sport where [you’re supposed to] quit playing when you get the lead. In golf, you keep trying to improve your score every hole. In basketball, you don’t stop shooting when you’re ahead. In boxing, you don’t quit punching when you’re ahead.
Did you know…
- The 25 goals scored by Celina last night was a girls state record…
- Van Wert is not fielding a boys soccer team this season

Q: What is the status of Van Wert boys soccer? I’ve been looking for scores and I can’t even find a schedule? Was the program shut down? Name withheld upon request
A: I won’t say shut down but it appears at least for now, it’s been put on pause.
I checked with Van Wert High School Athletic Director Trent Temple for more information and he said that the Van Wert High School Athletic Council determined that putting the boys’ soccer program on pause was necessary due to a combination of factors, mainly low participation numbers. He added participation numbers across the state have become a major concern for many schools across Ohio. From 2021-2022 to 2022-2023, Ohio schools saw a 17 percent decrease in athletes participating in high school sports.
“We understand that this decision was disappointing to our students, parents, and alumni,” a statement said. “We are committed to providing a range of athletic opportunities and supporting our student-athletes in every way possible. Suspending the boys’ soccer program was not a decision taken lightly. After exploring multiple alternatives over several months, the Athletic Council concluded that pausing the boys’ soccer program was necessary.”
“Looking ahead, our primary focus is on re-establishing a sustainable boys’ soccer program. We are committed to developing a strong and viable boys’ soccer program that will benefit our students and the broader community. This plan emphasizes long-term success by addressing previous challenges and laying a solid foundation for the future.”
When the program does return, hopefully it will be able to enjoy some success. According to the WBL website, Van Wert soccer has been in existence for 29 seasons and has an overall record of 24 wins, 218 losses and 17 ties.

You want the real story contact the parents. The VW athletic director is a misogynistic dumptruck of a person. When he took over it was clear from the beginning that all efforts and money should go to the football team. He tried to shut down the girls entire season because they had to forfeit one game. Playing games with only 24 hrs recovery tired the girls out and many players had been injured durning the pervious game for lack of down time. Did you know we had a great coach, who played professional soccer, and was working to get the team up to a more competitive standard? He left the program because he was getting zero support or communications from said director and principal. My daughter was heart broken when we pulled her from competing after he threatened to ” met me in the parking lot” when I questioned his reasons for trying to pull the team. We had a big parents meeting and everyone was unhappy. So much more to this story.

It’s sad to see this article published, considering it doesn’t seem to be with the purpose of helping the “problem”. Therefore it’s just serving as a method of embarrassment or sadness for those it concerns. In reality the girls soccer program has had and currently have a phenomenal coach that truly cares about them! They are learning to be incredible people, hard working, resilient, etc. There are a lot bigger problems they could be dealing with than just losing and there are A LOT of things they are learning besides just winning. Ask any opposing team what they think of the VW players and coach and you will only hear about how positive and respectful they are. The truth is that VW needs to come together as a community and get youth soccer established!! Grow the interest, grow the skills, grow the success! There’s no reason they can’t have girls soccer AND volleyball, there are similar sized schools with both. It would be devastating to see the girls program disappear when they are clearly wanting to be there! It would be wonderful to see a follow-up article written about a meeting or way interested people want to help this “problem”!

wow. Way to run a bunch of hard working girls into the ground. They are in high school. You just beat them down worse than any of their losses.

Hey man, how old are you? How mature and professional of a writer are you? I’m a college student who was able to identify at least 4 different errors in your article. We won’t even acknowledge the fact that your article does nothing but to serve as criticism about something that doesn’t need to be criticized. The fact you focused on the record of the girls in the present and past, and not even talk to any of the players or coaches for this season, goes to show what you truly cared about achieving with this, embarrassment and probably trying to bolster a writing career that’s going nowhere, hence why you’re writing on a new website about high school sports and other happenings that nobody has ever heard of. So do me a favor before you decide to insult the effort and skills of extremely hardworking 14-18 year olds (two of which are my little sisters), worry about your own life and your own hometown teams who have always been known for being extremely dirty and unsportsmanlike, and think twice before talking crap about a team from the town of Van Wert. Thanks
