In the most recent Indiana Soccer
Coaches Association poll for boys, the top-ranked Center Grove Trojans will host Columbus East in the opening match of Sectional 13. Also, in Class 3A, the second-ranked and three-time defending champion
Noblesville Millers will meet No. 11 Westfield in the Sectional 9 opener played at Carmel. Noblesville has won 19 consecutive state tournament matches and is five away from tying North Central of Indianapolis (1994-97) for the state record.
In 2A, the No. 1 Evansville Memorial Tigers, last year’s state runner-up, will play Evansville Bosse in the first round of Sectional 32 played at Heritage Hills. Last year’s 2A state champion, the Mishawaka Marian Knights are now playing in 3A and will open with Michigan City in Sectional 3 at Plymouth. And the Covenant Christian Warriors, the top team in Class 1A, will tangle with Sectional 40 host Southmont in the bye match. The defending state champion and third-ranked Bethany Christian Bruins will host Marquette Catholic in Sectional 34.
In this week’s girls coaches poll, the Class 3A No. 1 Hamilton Southeastern Royals will meet crosstown rival and No. 20 Fishers in Sectional 8. That sectional group also includes two-time defending champion and second-ranked host Noblesville on the other side of the bracket.
The Class 2A top-ranked South Bend Saint Joseph Huskies will meet Jimtown in Sectional 18. Another 1 vs. 2 contest could occur with second-ranked host Mishawaka Marian on the opposite side of that draw. The defending state champion Guerin Catholic Golden Eagles drew fifth- ranked Indianapolis Bishop Chatard in the semifinals of Sectional 26 at Brebeuf Jesuit.
And the Class 1A No. 1 Heritage Christian Eagles will host Christel House in Sectional 41. Park Tudor, 1A state champion the last two seasons, now reside in Class 2A where the seventh- ranked Panthers await the Hamilton Heights-Brebeuf Jesuit winner in Sectional 26. State tournament brackets, including dates and times for each match, will be uploaded this week at IHSAA.org and MaxPreps.com.
About the Draw
To conduct the random drawing for the state tournament, the IHSAA places ping-pong balls representing each school in each sectional into a lottery-style air mix machine. A motorized fan in the bottom of the machine blows the balls around the inside of the transparent container and air then forces each ball up through a tube in random order. For example, the first ball retrieved from the machine will be the visiting team in game one with the second ball representing the home team in game one. The third ball to come out is the visitor in game two and the fourth ball the home team in game two. That same method is followed through all 48 sectionals to determine every team’s placement in the bracket.
