(3-17-25) Great Crossing’s Malachi Moreno and Sacred Heart’s Zakiyah Johnson were announced as the 2025 Mr. and Miss Kentucky Basketball at an awards ceremony on Sunday.

Moreno, a 6’10 center signed with the University of Kentucky and a McDonald’s All-American, has helped lead Georgetown’s Great Crossing Warhawks to back-to-back 11th Region championships. Moreno averaged 21.6 points, 14.9 rebounds, 3.6 blocks, and 3.5 assists per game this season while shooting 72 percent from the field. His 1,896 career rebounds rank him fourth all-time in state history.

For his career Moreno has 2,392 points and 611 career blocks.

Great Crossing finished the regular season ranked No. 2 in the state

Johnson earned the Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year and the KHSAA State Championship MVP during each of her four seasons in high school for the Valkyries. She eclipsed the 3,000 career-point mark for her time at Sacred Heart, which, when added with her 780 points during her two years as a middle-school varsity player at Shelby County High School, gives her 3,870 points over her high school career, good for fifth all time in KHSAA. This year she averaged 21.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.4 steals.

Johnson helped lead Sacred Heart to four straight KHSAA State Championships during her time with the team, extending the Valkyries’ streak to five years.

Johnson was named a McDonald’s All-American this year

The Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation and the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches presented the awards.
