(5-26-25) The Kentucky High School Class 1A Region 1 track meet’s running events were all forced to be re-run due to timing errors at the initial meet at Murray High School on Wednesday. The re-run took place this past Saturday at Caldwell County High School.
Field Events Unaffected: The field events (e.g., jumps, throws) were not re-done, and their results from the initial meet remained valid.
Impact on State Qualifiers: The re-run means that all performances from the original running events (including place, time, and record) were voided, and new qualifiers for the state meet were determined.
Teams Affected: Team standings and scoring in the running events were also affected, as the initial results were voided.
NIGHTMARE
A complete track meet was held…when it was found out that there was a timing issue.
Re-running every running event had to be a ‘nightmare‘ for everyone who was involved. For those who have ever run a region type track meet there is a lot of work that goes on before, during and after the meet. To turn around in just a few short days and even move the site of the meet….could give you a major migraine.
What was the financial fall-out for everyone…expenses were involved for everyone…from hiring officials to travel expenses. Plus the inconvenience of doing it on a holiday weekend at the end of the school year when schools are holding graduations.
For athletes it had to have been an emotional time …going from a high to a low. Thinking you have already qualified for the state meet to have to try and do it again. Did that happen to any qualifiers?
The top two finishers at region and the next 10 times/heights/distances statewide qualified for the state meet set for Thursday at the University of Kentucky.
Yes the times might have been wrong…but if the distances were correct…the finishes should have been accepted. In the old days stop watches were used to determine winners times…in this world of AI and other forms of ranking programs there would have to be a way to calculate times for seeding. Even looking at videos of races could of helped with that.
Was the re-running of the event the right choice? No matter this is an embarrassment.
Kentucky High Sschool Athletic Association statement—
Due to a variety of meet, administrative and technical errors with the timing and results process, all Class 1A Region 1 running events must be rerun.
The KHSAA office and state meet officials, including the software company, have conducted a lengthy review to try and solve the issues and find an alternative solution. Unfortunately, none of the running events were timed in the correct format. Accurate performance records are not available or able to be reconstructed, dramatically reducing alternative options. We have also consulted with the NFHS to be certain that the final determination is compliant with Federation rules. With at-large state qualifiers at stake, it is also vital to ensure fairness and transparency for the other six regions in Class 1A.
After an emergency Zoom meeting with the member schools in the region, it has been determined that the best path forward is for the meet to be rescheduled for Saturday, May 24th at 1:00 PM CT. The site has also been moved to Caldwell County High School. We are thankful for both the great participation and understanding of the region teams throughout the rescheduling discussion.
Only the running events will need to be conducted again, as the field events were not impacted. The unified and adapted events will not need to be repeated. Due to the rerun and according to NFHS Rules, all
performances from running events of the first meet will be voided, including place (qualifying), time, and record, as well as the team results and scoring. State qualifiers will only be considered from the performances of the running events in Class 1A Region 1 on Saturday, May 24th.
The original entries submitted by the schools will remain as the entries for the rescheduled meet. Because this is a reset from the beginning, coaches may make new relay declarations when reporting to the
clerk.
