(9-22-25) This past Thursday during a JV football game in Michigan, Lakeshore vs. Kalamazoo Central, saw a Lancers player take a ‘cheap shot‘ that left him with a broken spine.

The incident took place in the third quarter when a Kalamazoo Central player (#73) jumped on Mims after he was already down from first contact.

Mims was taken to a local hospital where they found that he had broken his spine in two places.

The video below was taken by Mims mother Courtney…who said after seeing her son was injured commented

“And I at first was like, is that my son? And as soon as it clicked that it was, I couldn’t be stopped. I had to go down there. It was I’ve never felt anything like it. I’ve never been as upset or shaken up as I was over something for my son.”

Colton Mims (15) was playing for Lakeshore (Michigan) on Sept. 19 and was locked up and being blocked by an opposing player before falling to the ground. The opposing player proceeded to jump on Mims leaving him with severe injuries to his spine.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) statement on any disciplinary action against the student –

“We are aware of the situation you’re describing … We’ve talked to both schools, and they are resolving this issue internally.”
