(9-30-25) This past Friday in a Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC) a football game played with Marion Local and Versailles had a national impact.

A call on a 4th down pass by Marion Local very late in the 4th quarter would lead to a situation that would go viral on social media. The Flyers entered the game with 69 consecutive wins, the most current streak in America. The call on the play was complete…the Flyers would go on to score and take the lead for the first time in the game and take the win…their 70th in a row.

But after the game pictures and videos showed up on social media that indicated to many that the Flyer receiver did not catch that pass. That would lead to all of the pictures and videos going viral.

Marion Local holds off Versailles 20-19 to win 70th straight game

The following statement was a request from SSN to the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) on the call made on the pass-

Tim Stried, OHSAA

“Each week, the OHSAA reviews video of controversial plays from around the state, such as the pass play toward the end of the Versailles vs. Marion Local game this past Friday. Many of the videos are used for officials training. There is no in-game video review during high school football until the state championship games, so officials’ decisions are final.”

Numerous calls like this happen numerous times over any season…but this one had a national interest in the consecutive game winning streaks. 70 consecutive wins is quite an achievement.

For Versailles, who is a MAC conference member, this was a BIG opportunity…not in just stopping the streak but in the run for the conference title. Versailles at one time held the record for most consecutive wins 54 in (1993-1997).

Friday night’s game was a great battle between two outstanding programs. Not many outside our community believed we would even be in the game, but our players showed tremendous fight and character from start to finish. Like many, I was frustrated by that call, but I have great respect for Marion Local and their tradition.

Coach Hetrick once told one of our teams after a tough loss,

“If this is the worst thing you have to go through in life, you’ve lived a really good life.”

That perspective is what high school athletics are truly about—teaching lessons that last well beyond the field. Our focus now is on supporting our team and moving forward together, with our attention on Anna this week.

The Marion Local streak will continue this Friday…but with human nature the way it…this is sure to bring up this game when the streak does finally end.

Will the streak need an * asterisk?

NOTE: Marion Local officials were given the opportunity to comment on the situation.
