(10-2-25) The heat was turned up today when Highland administrators have asked the Suburban League to kick Barberton out of the league after canceling their scheduled game with the Hornets on Friday.
It all started when Barberton Athletic Director John Sabol told the Highland administration earlier this week that the Magics would not be able to play on Friday (Oct. 3) according to the Highland athletic department.

In an Akron Beacon-Journal story-
Highland football coach Mike Gibbons-
“I feel terrible for the kids, for the school and for the community. It’s homecoming weekend. This is not the way we wanted to enjoy the weekend with the big game.”
Hornets athletic director Jon Bailey was in contact with the OHSAA director of officiating and sport management Beau Rugg and he was told the game will go down as a no contest. The divisors for Highland and Barberton in the Harbin rankings go down from 100 to 90 as well.

Highland athletic director calls for removal of Barberton High School from Suburban League
“Dear Suburban League Athletic Directors, I am writing to address the recent decision by Barberton to cancel a varsity football contest. While we understand the challenges that can arise throughout a season, this type of action raises significant concerns that we, as a league, cannot ignore.
“The Suburban League has always prided itself on its integrity, consistency, and commitment to providing fair opportunities for student-athletes. When a member school cancels a varsity event, it undermines that foundation. Such actions damage the credibility of our league, diminish the experience of our athletes and create uncertainty for schools that are upholding their obligations.
“Additionally, this sets a concerning precedent and exposes the league to liability issues. If a single member is allowed to cancel contests without appropriate consequences, it opens the door for future disruptions across multiple sports and seasons. This is not only unfair to the schools who meet their commitments, but also harmful to the reputation we have built as one of Ohio’s most respected leagues.
“In light of these circumstances, I recommend that we take formal action to remove Barberton from the Suburban League. Doing so will reinforce our shared values, protect the integrity of our schedules, and maintain the high standards we expect of all member schools.
“I look forward to hearing your thoughts and working together to ensure the continued strength and credibility of the Suburban League.
Respectfully,
Jon Bailey, Highland athletic director
