(10-30-25) Following last week’s Youngstown Chaney’s 10-6 win over Youngstown East in the final football meeting ever between the two programs…the players from both teams merged on the field as the Youngstown Defenders.

Youngstown City Schools Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor addressed the fans at Ryan Stadium, emphasizing the importance of coming together as one program starting in 2026.

Phase 1: High School Consolidation

The plan’s first phase, which will be implemented in the 2026-2027 school year, is unifying our two traditional high schools, Chaney and East, into one central high school located at the current East High School Site.

  • The new school names will be Youngstown Middle School and Youngstown High School, and the mascot will be “The Defender,” represented by an owl. The owl presence serves as a fitting representation of the Defenders’ spirit—watchful, resilient, and ready to rise above adversity.

Players and cheerleaders were presented with Youngstown Defenders t-shirts.

In July the following plan was introduced.

The Youngstown City School District (YCSD) is thrilled to announce the introduction of its new district-wide mascot, The Defenders, in the fall of 2026. The mascot was selected based on feedback from a community survey, in which scholar voices were heavily weighted to ensure that the vision for their school identity was represented and heard. The survey stemmed from the recent announcement that YCSD will consolidate Chaney and East Middle Schools, as well as Chaney and East High Schools.

Based on feedback from the community and further conversation with the Youngstown Board of Education, the new school names have now transitioned from Youngstown Unified to Youngstown High School and Youngstown Middle School.

The symbol of the Defender will be the owl. Indigenous to Ohio, the owl’s presence serves as a fitting representation of the Defenders’ spirit—watchful, resilient, and ready to rise above adversity. With fierce eyes and sharp insight, the Defender Owl serves as a reminder that knowledge is power and protecting it is our collective responsibility.

In collaboration with dedicated teams at the district, a powerful visual identity has been developed to bring the Defenders to life. The logo incorporates bold, symbolic colors—red, yellow, blue, white, and black—that reflect strength, unity, and diversity. The final design will be used in school branding, athletic uniforms, and throughout district communications to inspire a new era for Youngstown students, staff, and community members.

Reflecting on the power of the new mascot, YCSD Superintendent Jeremy Batchelor said, “The Defenders mascot goes beyond a name; it is a powerful symbol of strength, who we are, and who we are becoming. We are grateful for our scholars, staff, alumni, and community support, and look forward to what lies ahead for the future of Youngstown City School District.”

Youngstown Board of Education President Juanita Walker added how the new mascot symbolizes the future of the district. “The introduction of the Defender mascot, represented by the owl, marks an exciting new chapter for YCSD. This thoughtful decision, shaped by student and community input, highlights the district’s commitment to unity, wisdom, and resilience. I look forward to seeing the Defender Owl inspire growth and pride throughout the Youngstown City School District.”
