NORMAL — Byron won its fourth Illinois state title and third in five seasons beating Tolono Unity in a shootout in the Class 3A title game.

The Tigers (14-0) had to hang on for the win, thanks to Caden Considine who broke up a fourth-down pass in the endzone to pickup the win.

Considine set a Class 3A championship game record with 367 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. He added 62 receiving yards on two catches.

The game set a Class 3A record for points scored in a title game (106), surpassing the 89 scored in Plano’s 47-42 win over St. Joseph-Ogden in 2006. The two teams combined for 1,211 yards and that set a 3A record.

Unity quarterback Dane Eisemenger set a 3A title game record, finishing with 545 passing yards on 42-for-65 passing with seven touchdowns. Three of his receivers went for 100-plus yards: Henry Hoggard (12 catches, 189 yards), Tyler Henry (16-160) and Mason O’Neill (6-130).

Unity (12-2) made a run when they scored with 2:00 remaining in the game to pull within 56-50 and then recovered an onside kick to set up the final drive.

Unity was seeking its first state title in now seven trips to the title game.
