(12-3-25) The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) Board of Directors, at its meeting Wednesday in Mechanicsburg, approved the 35-second shot clock. Implementation will be during the 2028-29 JV and varsity boys and girls basketball seasons, joining 31 other states and Washington, D.C. The vote by the board was unanimous.
PIAA Assistant Executive Director Jen Grassel
“The board has done a great job of vetting this out, looking at everything, looking at prices and talking to their member schools. We followed the process step-by-step trying to see if it was the right move for Pennsylvania and I think that’s what they did.”
The shot clock gained approval on a first-reading basis in July, and following a September pass, cleared a second vote in October.
The three-year time period will provide schools time to purchase and install the necessary equipment, train officials and game operations people, and adjust budgets to account for the change.
