United Umpires Facebook Post

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It is with profound sadness that I share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Jeff Tamarri, a beloved cornerstone of United Umpires here in Indianapolis.
Last night, we lost Jeff suddenly and tragically while he was doing what he loved most, officiating a game. Though his departure leaves an immense void in our hearts, there is a quiet comfort in knowing he left us pursuing his passion, surrounded by sports that defined so much of his life.
Jeff was more than an outstanding official who graced countless games across many sports; he was a mentor, a friend, and a guiding light to young athletes, coaches, and fellow umpires alike. From March through October, he devoted endless hours at Grand Park, leading quietly by example with his unwavering integrity, calm strength, and remarkable ability to navigate even the most challenging moments with grace and fairness. His presence was steady and reassuring, his heart was enormous, and he had a rare gift for treating everyone with genuine respect and kindness.
Those who knew Jeff will forever remember his warm, infectious smile and the deep, authentic love he showed to players, coaches, colleagues, friends, and his family. He will be deeply missed by all of us, and especially by his longtime roommate and best friend, Terry Taylor, whose bond with Jeff touched everyone who witnessed it.
In the days ahead, please join me in lifting Jeff’s family in prayer as they navigate this unimaginable loss. Hold Terry and all those closest to Jeff especially close in your thoughts, as we know this grief weighs heavily on their hearts.
I will always cherish a moment from two years ago that revealed the true depth of Jeff’s character. When I faced hurtful words from another official, Jeff, without hesitation and without obligation, stood firmly by my side. In the days that followed, he reached out to check on me, ensuring I was okay. That simple act of standing up for what was right, and following through with care, showed me the kind of man he was: someone who chose kindness and courage every single time.
Jeff’s assignments here on earth may have come to an end, but I have no doubt that the Lord has welcomed him with open arms and entrusted him with new ones in heaven—ones we all aspire to earn someday.
Rest in peace, dear friend. You will be missed more than words can ever express, but your legacy of love, respect, and quiet strength will live on in all of us.
With a heavy heart,
Derek Whitfield
