(2-15-26) It may have been Valentine’s Day…a day known for love, but that is not what happened.
At Lorain High School on Saturday afternoon in a make-up non-conference game against Toledo Rogers .
With 42 seconds left in the third period and Lorain leading 51-36, a foul was called on Rogers and, after some complaining to the official about the call, a technical foul was assessed to the Rams.
Both teams started yelling at each other in front of the Rogers bench and after a shove to the face by one of the players, a full-on fight started between the two teams.
The Lorain Police Department state that’s when an 18-year-old man left the bleachers and “entered the court and unnecessarily interjected himself into the altercation,” . The man, identified as Lorain resident Jay’l Diaz (a senior at Lorain High School) was quickly arrested taken to the Lorain County Jail on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and assault.
“His actions disrupted the efforts of law enforcement and safety personnel to manage the situation.”
Police say an investigation into the brawl remains ongoing and investigators are working with school officials to identify any other individuals who may have been involved. While Diaz was the only person charged for the incident as of Sunday evening, police say more people could face charges based on the findings of the probe.
Both teams will will have to wait until next week to find out if the game will be declared official or possibly a no-contest by the OHSAA along with any suspensions handed down because of the altercation.

“The situation remains under review & details are still being gathered and verified. The district holds its student-athletes to the highest standards of conduct & sportsmanship. Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken based on the findings of investigation.”
Lorain City Schools statement –
The situation was addressed swiftly and effectively due to the coordinated response of our on-site safety personnel, event staff, and the Lorain Police Department… The district has zero tolerance for violence that disrupts school events or threatens the safety of students, staff, families or guests.
The Lorain schools were requesting for parents, staff and the community to refrain from sharing the video of the brawl online and to report it to police.
