(3-26-26) This weekend Indiana will crown four state boys basketball champions in Indianapolis, but for some it is being overshadowed by the firing of Mishawaka Marian veteran coach Robb Berger.

Berger, the longtime boys’ basketball coach at Marian High School in Mishawaka, Indiana, was fired on March 25, 2026.

Marian statement-

Marian High School (a private Catholic school in the South Bend/Mishawaka area) issued a brief statement:

Background and Context

Berger had two stints at Marian totaling 19 seasons (1996–99 and 2010–26), with an overall record for the Knights of 336–118. His career record across 28 seasons (including time as head coach at Wawasee and Mishawaka) stands at 436–217. He led the Knights to five sectional titles, two regionals and a Class 3A semi-state appearance in 2022.

The recent firing follows a one-game suspension that Berger served during Marian’s IHSAA Class 3A regional championship game on March 14th against East Chicago Central. The school self-reported the repeated IHSAA violation: allowing a non-member of the team or staff to participate in practice.

A few days after the above regional game the Mishawaka Police Department announced that it was investigating an alleged batter incident that took place at a Marian boys basketball practice on March 10th.

There has been no updates on the investigation as of March 25th.

Since the firing Berger has been quite open with local media sources about what has taken place and the circumstances.
