Celina LHP  pitcher Seth Lonsway (Sr) has been named the WBL Player of the Year. Lonsway has committed to play at Ohio State, but will be a target in the upcoming MLB draft.

Celina Head Baseball Coach Andy Mikesell:

Seth Lonsway is a rare combination of talent and work-ethic. I have never seen someone dedicate themselves to a sport like he has to baseball and making himself as good as he can be.

In my mind he is now the best pitcher in the state and right there with the best in the country.

He his definitely a rare athlete but most importantly a rare person. He has gone through so much in his short life and has always maintained an exceptional personal standard and humility. He is always willing to help out with younger players, field maintenance or just any odd job I have for baseball or personally; he has always been there to help whoever needed it.

Wapakoneta Head Coach Jason Brandt was named as WBL Coach of the Year.

Coldwater Picks Up 30th MAC Baseball Title

(5-9-17)  The Coldwater Cavaliers picked up their 30th Midwest Athletic Conference championship trophy after knocking off Marion Local last night (5-8-17) 7-2. For Coach Brian Harlamert it is his 11th as the Cavalier Head Coach.

After the game Coldwater pitcher Dylan Brosher told Press Pro Magazine:

“This makes 15 wins for us now. They said we’d be decent at the start of the year, but no one ever thought we’d be MAC champs.”

The MAC has played baseball since 1974, the league which started in 1973,  did not compete in baseball the first season.  The Cavaliers under Hall of Fame Coach Lou Brunswick won 9 of the first 10 MAC titles (1974-1984).  Brunswick picked up 16 of the 30 titles during his run as Head Coach, his last one was in 1993.

Gabby Wilker, who coached four years between Brunswick and Harlamert, won three out of four MAC titles during his tenure.

The MAC has had a good run at the state level in baseball over the years, Coldwater has 6 State titles, St. Henry has 3 state trophies, while Parkway and Minster both have 2 in the trophy case.

Coach Mikesell Talks About Defiance Win and Key WBL Match-up

Andy Mikesell
Celina Head Baseball Coach Andy Mikesell- thanks to http://www.snapintimepics.com

(4-25-17) The last time Defiance had lost a Western Buckeye League game, they dropped a home game to Celina 1-0 on April 21, 2015, the next time they lost again it was to Celina at home 1-0 this past Friday night.

How big was the Celina win?  Since 1999 it’s only the sixth win for the Green and the White, the most by any WBL member,  against one of Ohio’s strongest baseball programs.

The Celina’s Seth Lonsway threw six scoreless innings giving up two hits,  nine strikeouts and five walks in Friday night’s game. In 2015,  Lonsway threw seven scoreless innings, two hits, five walks and five strikeouts.

2015 the Bulldogs won the WBL title for the first time since 1988, tonight they hope to be in place to win another they when they play Wapakoneta in a battle of undefeated and original WBL members.

Celina Head Coach Andy Mikesell talks about the win and the game tonight:

Big Celina crowd made the trip, what did that mean to you and the kids?

The crowd was great, not that the kids needed the motivation but I think that definitely made the realize how much the community cares about baseball and our team.

Seth pitched out of a bunch of 2-runners on base situations, they used the bunt

They had a good game plan going in and that was small-ball but attacking the 1B line with a lefty on the mound. e just struggled with his command and put them in situations where they could bunt by walking guys but he battled through and got the outs we needed.

Did pitch count play in Seth only going 6 innings?

Not as far as OHSAA rules. He was just throwing a lot of pitches and I am not a proponent of pushing the limit with any kid so I pulled him and let Shawn come in and finish it up.

How big was Shawn Rose in the save?

Obviously it was big that we didn’t blow it for him even though it seemed like we were trying our hardest. Shawn has done the same thing for 4 years and that’s throw strikes. He came in and did the same thing and following up 90s with 60-70s will mess anyone up.

How big was Jake Smalley’s hit to score the only run, after the Dogs had left runners on base earlier in the game…

It was huge to get that run in. We missed a lot of opportunities to score. Part of it was on me for not forcing things a little more but they had a good pitcher on the mound who did a good job of getting out some jams.

How do you approach Wapak on Tuesday…

We need to hit. I think we will pitch and play defense but our bats have gone quiet as of late and we have too many good hitters to let that happen for a long period of time. I think we need to stay aggressive and not miss the good pitch to hit.
