(12-15-16) Every year in the Chicago Public League two of the powerhouses, Simeon (nationally ranked) and Morgan Park play the a rivalry game the ‘Battle of Vincennes‘ (both are located on South Vincennes Avenue). When Morgan Park is the home team they play at the Mustangs school gym, which can sit maybe 300 fans. The game also draw a lot of media attention, radio, TV and newspaper, it does cause some very close quarters. Once in awhile tempers and emotions flare.
Even Coach Norman Dale’s Hickory Huskers gym (in Knightstown, Indiana) seats 1,200 fans, 900 more than Morgan Park’s gym.
Last year’s game caused quite a stir when CPS officials wanted to move the game to another site for more room and added income. The Morgan Park parents called for a boycott, feeling that moving the game would take away the ‘home court’ advantage and change the environment of the game. Plus, parents decided to pursue a new gym at the school at the same time. The game would not be played on the scheduled night, but it would be played at a later date, as CPS met with the parents and a solution was found. Yes the game was played at Morgan Park.
Tonight they played again and in attendance was Illini Head Coach John Groce and several other high profile coaches as well, it’s not unusual for D1 coaches to take in this game.
And tonight Simeon wins over Morgan Park 59-57, in a game that was very ‘chippy’ according to several reports. which included technicals and security guards involvement. Atmosphere for sure.
