(6-20-17) Barney Otten, the father of Coldwater Football Coach Chip and Celina Cross Country and Track Coach Dan Otten, has passed away according to a tweet last night by Coldwater Athletic Director Eric Goodwin.

Otten was Coldwater’s Head Coach for three years (1974-76), during that time he went 26-4, won two MAC titles and led his 1976 team to a undefeated 10-0 season.

In August of 1952, Barney Otten became Middletown Fenwick’s first coach at the new school. Coach Otten led the Falcons through that first football season, which included the school’s first win (16-17-1 – 1952-55).
Barney coached the Fenwick basketball team for its first four seasons as well, compiling an overall record of 38 wins against 54 losses. The school’s first team (1952-53) compiled an record of 12-9, including a string of ten wins in a row, with a group of players who had never before played together.
Otten is a member of the Fenwick Hall of Fame.
Otten in the late 1950’s was one of Lima Central Catholic’s first head coaches. He coached College football Hall of Fame member Jim Lynch who played for Notre Dame and won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs.
From 1961-1966 he was the first head coach at Dayton Carroll.

OBITUARY –
OTTEN, Bernard Joseph “Barney” (92) a native of Pittsburgh PA passed away peacefully in Coldwater, Ohio, on June 19, 2017, surrounded by his family. Barney is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Pat (Stonebarger), his 7 children, 6 in-laws, 15 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, and many extended family members. Barney was not only a dedicated family man, but a retired teacher and coach who impacted thousands of people with his energetic personality and zest for life.
A celebration of his life will be held June 23, 2017, from 6-10 pm at the Depot in Coldwater, Ohio, on North Elm Street. In lieu of flowers or gifts, feel free to make a donation to your favorite charity in Barney’s name. Per his wishes, this is a casual celebration with family and friends.
