2018 OHSAA Girls Basketball Program

(3-12-18) This coming weekend Ohio will crown four girls state basketball  champions in the first year of the competitive balance plan in place. Has there been a change?

In 2016-17 three State champions were private schools, Gilmour Academy (III), Alter (II) and Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame (I). Two of the championship games (II & I) featured private schools battling for the title

This weekend in Columbus, only two private schools are left in the Final 16, Elyria Catholic (III) and Gilmour Academy (II).

Has the competitive balance mad a change, below might be some result of the changes.

Last season’s D III champions, Gilmour Academy has moved up to D II and now will play for another state title in that division. The Lancers beat Versailles 56-54 for the championship.  This year Versailles is back for another shot at winning a D III title. The Tigers will play a private school that has moved down from D II, Elyria Catholic (22-5),  in the semifinal game  The Panthers are one of the very, very few private schools to move  down a division (from D II to D III).

In last season’s D II title game, Hathaway Brown ( all-girls private school) lost to Alter, this year they moved up a division to D I.

This year two divisions are made up of public schools, D I and D IV, in the final four. Last year in D I two private schools played for the state title.
