(5-7-18) Yesterday in Indiana the IHSAA held their 2018 state baseball tournament draw. Indiana is a state that does not believe in seeding for first round baseball tournament games.
The draw for two of the top teams in 2A in Indiana and Adams County got the worse draw they could have imagined.
The State Baseball polls came out today, South Adams (17-1) is ranked #1 and Adams Central (12-5) is #8 both in 2A. There reward for having a good year is that they will now play each other in a first round game of the 2A sectionals (#36). This guarantees that at least one Top 10 will be eliminated from the tournament on day 1. To add to the ‘bad luck’ for these teams is the winner of that game will have to play a second game to advance to the six-team sectional final.
It is not unusual in a blind draw for this to happen and does seem to happen a lot. Many think it is time to start seeding, but you must remember this is the state that some would still like to see single-class basketball return.
For the Starfires and Flying Jets the ‘luck of the draw’ reaps no reward for having a great season.
Other teams in the 2A sectional (records from MaxPreps) on draw day:
- Bluffton 8-9
- Woodlan 6-10
- Churubusco 5-10
- Canterbury 3-11
