(8-4-18) The two longest consecutive high school football winning streaks are very impressive as the 2018 football season gets ready to kick-off next week.

The longest streak in the US is held by the Kimberly (Wisc) Papermakers who have won 70 consecutive games, including 5 WIAA state titles in a row.

They open the season on August 17th against Fond du Lac. Last season the two teams played twice with Kimberly winning the regular season match-up 35-28 and the playoff game 28-21.  In both games the Cardinals came close to ending the streak, it will be a very tough opener for both schools.

Not looking back but looking forward is Kimberly Head Coach Steve Jones when he told the

“We’re taking care of those daily monotonous drills. [But] we have an unique urgency to it, accountability to it that we’re going to do it at a high level and that will add up over the season.”

Meanwhile, in the 49th state, the Soldotna (Ak) Stars kick off their season this Friday night at home against big-school  rival Anchorage West and they will be going for consecutive win #60 and hoping to win its ASAA seventh consecutive state title.

You can bet the Soldotna faithful are keeping one eye on what the Papermakers are doing from week to week, the Stars like winning and to lead the country in consecutive wins would be just one more accomplishment.

The Stars’ Head Coach Galen Brantley has put together a program that is impressive for any state.

Putting together a long consecutive game winning streak is a recipe that not every school can follow.  These two schools, Kimberly and Soldotna, both have the ingredients to accomplish those achievements.

The Winning Recipe

  • total commitment from coaches and players
  • always trying to improve in anyway they can
  • not living on past accomplishment but looking to the next goal
  • a winning mindset, even when they face a challenge
  • winners don’t just happen, they work on it

With both teams having targets on their backs and their opponents who would love to end these streaks, both schools will have to once again play quality football to keep the streaks going.

Did you know….

  • the all-time national record for consecutive wins is 151 set by De La Salle (Concord, Calif.)
  • ‘When The Game Stand Tall’ movie highlights the streak before and after it is broken
