Story by Samuel Houseworth
(10-14-19) D-I: Marysville at Upper Arlington is practically a play-in game for the Ohio High School Athletic Association playoffs in Week 8. Both teams probably need to win 2 of their final 3 to get into their region’s top 8. With a loss this Friday, either team would be on the outside looking in, come November.
D-II: I feel like I’ve focused a lot on La Salle this season, but the lack of intuition surrounding their playoff odds is fascinating. Currently they are at 44%, despite a 6-1 record. They finish the season with St. X, Winton Woods, and Elder. All 3 teams are in the top 15 in the Projection Index.
D-III: Region 9 is jammed packed with numerous great football teams, more than the 8 who will qualify for the postseason. The biggest question mark is Steubenville, who sits at 5-2, but is off this coming weekend. And that bye week could cost them a chance at the postseason.
D-IV: Two huge matchups involve D-IV teams this weekend that will have serious playoff consequences. On Friday, Northwest heads to Manchester in PAC-7 action with a little exit on the line this year. Then Saturday, Cardinal Mooney hosts Warren G Harding, Mooney is a touchdown underdog with both teams sitting at 4-3.
D-V: Region 19 is the focus this week with Portsmouth at Fairland. Fairland needs this win to keep their hopes alive, but the same could be said for Portsmouth. Either way, a first round playoff game at Ironton or Ridgewood isn’t ideal for either.
D-VI: #1 vs. #2 this Friday as Coldwater heads to Anna for, what should be the MAC Championship. But on top of that, with 9 teams with 6+ wins in Region 23, a loss means one of the best small schools in the state wouldn’t lock up a playoff spot for sure.
D-VII: Waynesfield-Goshen hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2012. To break that streak, they will need an upset win at Lehman Catholic on Friday in NWCC action.
