(11-25-19) The Boylan Titans opened their basketball season and their Thanksgiving Invitational with a bang with a come from behind win over Peoria Richwoods 69-65.
It was not a typical first game of the season, both teams played well on both ends of the floor in a fast paced game.
Both teams came back from large margins, Richwoods was trailing 17-10 in the first quarter when they made a 9 point run, that was finished off with a 3-point shot at the buzzer by the Knights Connor Martin to take a 19-17 lead.
The Knights were not done on that run, they would extend that lead to 34-23 with a little over 3 minutes to go in the 1st half. The half would end with Richwoods in front by 10, 42-32.
The 2nd half would be Boylan’s, outscoring the Knights 37-23. Boylan would battle back and finally tied it up at 61 with 3:17 to go in the game, but the Knights would still lead with 42 seconds to go by one point 65-64.
With 27 seconds to go in the game Andrew Latino would make the go ahead basket after a Richwoods turnover…he was fouled, but played continued and it looked like the Knights had an easy lay-up. It seems no one heard the official’s whistle and play continued, but since play had been stopped the Richwoods basket was waved off. Latino made the free throw and Richwoods would not score on their last possession.
Connor Martin led the Knights with 16 points, including 3-threes, Isaiah Donnell and Willie Anderson both added 10 points.
Anthony Brown led all scorers with 23 points to lead the Titans. Latino added 17 points, including 2-3 pointers.
Richwoods hit 7 3-pointers on the night, while Boylan had just 2. Richwoods was 10 of 21 from the free throw line, while Boylan was 19 of 27.
