(12-1-19) Marion Local will travel to Canton next Saturday to play Lucas to decide the 2019 OHSAA D VII State Football Champion. For the Flyers it will be their 14th appearance in the state finals under Coach Tim Goodwin and a chance to pick up their 11th state title overall, that would tie the OHSAA all-time (any division) championship record mark currently held by D I Cleveland St. Ignatius.
The Flyers opponent will be the Lucas Cubs who look to win the school’s first ever state team championship.

Both teams have something in common, they both have overtime playoff scares, in week two of the playoffs Marion Local hung on to beat nearby rival Ft. Loramie 24-21, while Lucas survived with a week one win over McDonald 21-20.
The ‘Air Goodwin’ decided to ramp up their passing game on Saturday night against Patrick Henry in the state semifinal win.
– Charles Huelsman 7 catches, 250 yards, 3 TDs
– Kyle Muhlenkamp 10-of-12 passing, 289 yards, 3 TDs
Coach Goodwin told pressprosmagazine.com after the win –
“With Kyle throwing like he did tonight it gives us an added dimension because we do have two very good receivers in Huelsman and Otte…and that’s a good thing to see because we have had some ugly offense at times this year. He’s had some issues with inconsistency, but he’s a great kid and he just keeps plugging away. And you root for him to have a good game because he does everything we ask. I know he gets frustrated with himself at times, but it was fun to watch it happen for him tonight…and I hope he can do it one more time.”
Thanks to a Peyton Otte a 97-yard rushing TD, the Flyers added 202 more yards on the ground for 490 yards total offense.

A ‘Hoosier’ type movie moment happened in the Lucas state semifinal win over Harvest Prep on Saturday night.
With 7:35 left left in the game Warriors’ QB Josiah Carroll threw over the middle to Rashaun Goines who took it for a go-ahead 76-yard touchdown and take a 12-7 lead over Lucas, a two-point conversion run attempt failed.
Now comes the movie script ending that happened and will be long remembered in Lucas –
With a fourth and goal from the 13-yard line and trailing Harvest Prep 12-7 with just 54 seconds remaining in the game, the Cubs called a timeout. That is when Lucas Head Coach Scott Spitler drew up a play that the Cubs had never seen.
“We kind of drew it up in the dirt to be honest with you. It worked to perfection. It’s just two kids making a play and I couldn’t be more proud of them.”
The result was ‘movie script magic’-

Lucas quarterback Logan Niswander would roll to his left with the entire offense, meanwhile Riley Mounts would block to the back side for a quick second and then release to the right side towards end zone. It worked to perfection. Mounts was open and Niswander would hit him perfectly for a 13-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal. The Cubs decided to run for two and Ethan Sauder would carry it in for the score and in the end a 15-12 win. (Editor–Would be a great way to end a movie)
Niswander was jus 4-for-7 passing for 31 yards and rushed for 35 yards on eight carries. Tommy Zirzow ran for 98 yards on 27 carries, while Sauder added seven carries for 84 yards.

The ‘X’ Factor…
For Flyers Coach Tim Goodwin it will be their 9th consecutive state final game visit, each year is special, but the routine for this very hectic week is very familiar to coaches, players and fans. It will be a big advantage preparing for Saturday’s game when you been there in the past with a lot of familiar surroundings.
For Lucas it will be a time of excitement and coming off a very exciting and emotional win to advance. Although Marion Local players will have some butterflies, they have been through it several times and know what to expect. This could be a key for Lucas…how do they settle into the routine and demands of the week. They may not need a fast start, but they absolutly need to avoid a slow one. They will need to avoid any kind of a turnover and giving up big plays that can flattened their hopes.
