That is going to have to be enough for Auburn in 2020 as they will have no State tournament to look forward to this year thanks to COVID 19.
This past August (two months ago) the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced approval of a plan to conduct modified postseason state series tournaments in boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, girls swimming and girls tennis.
The IHSA plan does allow for a single round of regional geographic competition to be conducted the week of October 19-25.
IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said in August –
“The health and safety of the student-athletes, their coaches, and their school communities has been our priority from the start of the pandemic. Throughout the spring and summer, we looked for ways to reengage student-athletes with their peers and coaches, and our membership has shared countless positive experiences from that initial ‘return to play’ period.
“We have found similar value in being able to conduct fall sports, and believe the participants deserve a culminating experience if we can offer it safely.”
Belen Nevenhoven, who won her 4th consecutive NIC 10 1st singles title and was the 2019 runner-up in the 2A state finals, told WTVO TV it won’t be the same –
“I don’t know it’s just disappointing that I won’t ever have that again because I keep thinking I can just do that next year, but then I remember I’m a senior. The closer it gets to when State would be I just get more sad just because I miss that feeling so much.”

Auburn finished a COVID 19 shortened girls tennis season Saturday by winning its third consecutive 2A sectional title and seventh in school history. Auburn finished with 26 points and had four repeat state qualifiers. The bad news… there is no state tourney this year.
Belen Nevenhoven won the singles title 6-0, 6-0. Nevenhoven, second in the state last year.
Auburn players finished first and third in both singles and doubles. Phuong Pham won her third-place match over Hononegah’s Mika Menon 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
In doubles, Auburn’s Paris Thompson and Amy Park beat Hononegah’s Karlie Anderson and Lizzie Schindler 6-0, 6-3 in the finals.
