(10-12-20) In D-I, Region 2 could end up being total chaos. It is easily the most balanced of the 4 regions, even with Kettering Fairmont upsetting Perrysburg last week. Undefeated Northmont hosts Marysville in the regional quarterfinals and the Projection index likes the visiting Monarchs (64%) to pull the upset.
In D-II, there are four teams who are odds-on favorites to win their regions: Akron Hoban, Toledo Central Catholic, Massillon, and La Salle. As anticlimatic as it may be, don’t expect anybody to challenge them in the next two weeks. Though, that doesn’t mean games like Toledo St Francis and Anthoy Wayne won’t be instant classics.
D-III, you have to hope the OHSAA doesn’t pair Regions 9 and 12 together in the state semifinals. The top 8 teams in the division are all from those 2 regions. But over in Region 10, look out for West Holmes at Cloverleaf for a potential 5-12 upset. The Projection Index likes the Knights by double digits over the hosting Colts.
In another 5-12 upset, someone needs to explain how Lake Catholic was handed such a poor seed. The Lake Catholic Cougars are 2-touchdown favorites at Canton South in D-IV. Can’t look too far ahead in D-IV though as there is no clear favorite throughout the entire state.
Look out for Bath in D-V. Earning only their second win of the 2020 campaign, the Wildcats will be slight favorites at Northwestern with a potential date with WBL rival, Ottawa-Glandorf waiting in the regional quarterfinals.
We aren’t done with 5-12 upset talk as Hillsdale heads to Pymatuning Valley after dominating Campbell Memorial in the play-in round. The Falcons are nearly a 1 touchdown favorite against the Lakers with the winner likely getting a trip to perennial powerhouse Mogadore next week in D-VI.
The biggest upset, by seeds, according to the Projection Index is found in D-VII. Crestview is 9 1/2 point favorites at Calvert. However, the best game is also in Region 26 between Mohawk and Pandora-Gilboa. Both teams are in the top 12 in the Projection Index, making for an excellent game that should have been saved for the regional semifinals, at least.
