(11-2-20) Van Wert Senior QB Owen Treece has had a season to remember in the midst of a pandemic. The 2020 season was in question almost up to the first scheduled game, but it was saved by the OHSAA with a lot of hard work. The Van Wert Cougars have to be ecstatic that they had the opportunity to shine and now they continue to roll in the D IV playoffs.

Three straight playoff wins for the Cougars, including a win this weekend over the #1 seed in the Region Bellevue. The Cougars went 5-1 in the shortened WBL regular season, its only loss was to O-G by one point.

Playoff win over #1 seed Bellevue

This Saturday Van Wert will play in the D IV regional final against the #2 seed Shelby (10-0), the winner advances to the Final Four.

Treece, a three sport star, has shined brightly this season for the Cougars. His numbers in 9 games have been out of this world, 2,441 yards passing and 879 yards rushing (3,320 total yards). He has 28 passing TDs and has added 18 on the ground (46 total).

In a highlight game against WBL powerhouse St. Marys he rushed for 120 yards and threw for 340 more…460 total yards… in a 34-28 win.

At 5’11 190lbs Treece has proved himself on the field. 8 of 9 games he passed for over 200 yards, and in the one game that he didn’t throw for 200 he threw for a 198 yards. 6 of the 9 games he rushed for over 100 yards a game.

There are many quality quarterbacks in Ohio, but Owen Treece has proven he belongs in a class of his own. With him at the helm…the Cougars beat the #4 ranked D IV team (Bellevue) in Ohio last week, this week they face Shelby who is ranked #8 in the Regional final. Was Van Wert ranked? The Cougars received no mention in the final poll…in the region they were the #5 seed.

In Samuel Houseworth’s OHSAA Football Playoff Predictions, Van Wert is ranked 2nd of the remaining teams in D IV and will be the favorite over Shelby on Saturday to advance to the State semifinals.

Treece will be long remembered for his accomplishments, a state title would be a nice way to end his career.
