(11-2-20) Van Wert Senior QB Owen Treece has had a season to remember in the midst of a pandemic. The 2020 season was in question almost up to the first scheduled game, but it was saved by the OHSAA with a lot of hard work. The Van Wert Cougars have to be ecstatic that they had the opportunity to shine and now they continue to roll in the D IV playoffs.
Three straight playoff wins for the Cougars, including a win this weekend over the #1 seed in the Region Bellevue. The Cougars went 5-1 in the shortened WBL regular season, its only loss was to O-G by one point.

In a highlight game against WBL powerhouse St. Marys he rushed for 120 yards and threw for 340 more…460 total yards… in a 34-28 win.

There are many quality quarterbacks in Ohio, but Owen Treece has proven he belongs in a class of his own. With him at the helm…the Cougars beat the #4 ranked D IV team (Bellevue) in Ohio last week, this week they face Shelby who is ranked #8 in the Regional final. Was Van Wert ranked? The Cougars received no mention in the final poll…in the region they were the #5 seed.
In Samuel Houseworth’s OHSAA Football Playoff Predictions, Van Wert is ranked 2nd of the remaining teams in D IV and will be the favorite over Shelby on Saturday to advance to the State semifinals.
Treece will be long remembered for his accomplishments, a state title would be a nice way to end his career.
