(1-10-21) For Michigan High School Football it has been a season to remember (or forget). A season that started several weeks late because of the pandemic, a season that was paused in November in the middle of the playoffs…to the first games to being played in 2021 and in January to finish the playoffs. A total of 57 days in between playoff games. But yesterday the Michigan High School Athletic Association and those teams still in playoffs restarted…ask football coaches in Illinois if they would have done the same.

In the first week back in a Division 4 Regional final #1Edwardsburg (9-0) advances and will host Cadillac (7-2) in the state semifinals this weekend .

The Vikings, who won their first-even Regional trophy in school history with the win , will be more than happy to take the long road trip to play the Eddies for a chance to advance to the State Final game at Ford Field the following week. Due to field conditions they had to move their ‘home’ game late Friday night to Thirlby Field in Traverse City due to icy field conditions at Cadillac High School made the grass surface unsafe for play.

Cadillac showed they had a lot of character against Forest Hills Eastern when they were down 20-6 at halftime. The second half the Vikings defense would force four turnovers including two fumbles.

Cadillac Coach told the Record-Eagle after the game:

“We went in the locker room at halftime and really it was about everybody just chilling out and taking a breath. I told them to do your job because that’s what that’s what really hurt us in the first half, we had three turnovers.”

Noah Cochrane would lead the Vikings with 93 yards and a score on the ground, Carter Harsh added 58 yards and two scores, (QB) Aden Gurden ran for 76 yards and passed for 31 yards, and Kaleb McKinley rushed for 66 yards and a score. Collin Johnston led the defense with 10 total tackles and Dan Gray had six.

Edwardsburg looked like they had before the pandemic pause…they rushed for 306 yards, while limiting # 5 Grand Rapids South Christian’s passing offense to just one first-half touchdown and 138 total yards in a 47-7 Division 4 regional championship win.

Veteran Edwardsburg Coach Kevin Bartz told the South Bend Tribune after the game:

“We came out after 57 days and looked like we were still in midseason form. I give the kids a lot of credit for their preparation even when they were away from us.”

The Eddies were led by Drew Bidwell (Sr) who rushed for three touchdowns gaining 52 yards on 10 carries. Also scoring a TD for Edwardsburg was three others… Jackson Hoover (Sr) added 76 yards on eight carries, Gavin Houser (Soph) had 56 yards on five rushes and Logan McColley (Jr) added 51 yards on five carries. The Eddies out gained the Sailors 306-138 on offense.
