(8-15-21) Eric Flannery, head coach at St. Edward High School in Lakewood, Ohio,and will serve in his 14th coaching assignment with USA Basketball as an assistant coach for the 2021 USA’s U16 National Team.

Flannery will assist USA U16 National Team head coach Sharman White (Pace Academy, Ga.) and the other assistant coach Steve Turner (Gonzaga College H.S., D.C.).

At the 2021 FIBA Americas U16 Championship the USA will play in Group B and will meet Puerto Rico on Aug. 23 (3:30 p.m. EDT), Dominican Republic on Aug. 24 (12:30 p.m. EDT) and Chile on Aug. 25. (12:30 p.m. EDT). Rounding out the field in Group A are Argentina, Brazil, Canada and host Mexico.

After playing each of the teams in its groups, all eight teams advance to the quarterfinals on Aug. 27. The quarterfinal winners play in the semifinals on Aug. 28. On Aug. 29, the semifinal winners meet in the gold medal game, while the semifinal losers play in the bronze medal game.

Flannery recently completed his 25th season (1996-97 to present) with the St. Edward Eagles and has a 483-132 (.785) overall record.

Winning his first Ohio Division I state title in 1998, Flannery has led St. Edward to nine appearances in the state tournament final four and to the state title game in 2008.

Three times Flannery has been honored as the Cleveland Plain Dealer Coach of the Year (1997, 2007 and 2008), and he was recognized as the 2007 Associated Press Ohio Coach of the Year.

In 2020-21, the Eagles finished 15-5 and reached the state tournament D1 regional semifinals. In 2019-20 St. Edward went 25-1 and reached the state tournament D1 regional finals before the tournament was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
