(10-12-21) The Midwest Athletic Conference for several years after adding Versailles as a member was left with nine football schools. After several years of member schools having to schedule non-league games in the later weeks of the season they decided to fix that situation.
The solution was to invite Anna as a football only member school, the Rockets first season was in 2006. They have been a good fit competitive wise since that time, including adding a State title to the MAC trophy case.
still Anna, a full-member of the Shelby County League, started their football program in 2000…just a few years ahead of another SCL member Ft. Loramie. Since the Rockets had a team already competing at the varsity level for several seasons they were a good choice to join the MAC and solidify their program for the future.
Meanwhile…Ft. Loramie, whose next door neighbors are MAC members New Bremen and Minster, have been on a completely different path. This season they have returned to being an independent after their last league broke up…throw in the pandemic and you have a lot of scheduling chaos in 2021.
Last Friday, due to a last minute cancellation due to COVID 19 concerns, the Redskins faced big school neighbor Sidney and managed to pick up the win after a very long rain delay. It was the Redskins first home game in over a month. This year’s schedule has included several long road trips….including a game in Indiana against Greenfield-Central.
Would the Redskins fit into the MAC? They were able to play Minster (W-40-7) and Versailles (L-48-7) in the first two games of this season… the MAC schedules two non-conference games during week 1 and 2. They would be a perfect fit…since they are located near a group of the core MAC members.
Will it ever happen? There are some possible options. It could happen if… a member school would decide to leave or the conference would have to expand to 12 (football) members, that would mean finding another good fit.
