UNION CITY, Ind. (1-16-22) – After the Lady Indians JV got an overtime win over visiting Union County, members of the 2017 State Finals team were recognized during a 5-year reunion ceremony. Despite the loss in the IHSAA Class A State Finals game in Indianapolis, the historic journey was like none other in Union City school and community history.

2017 IHSAA State Program

Each of the 2017 “Dream Team” members in attendance were presented with their State Finals jersey as a memento from members of the current varsity squad.

UC head coach Sarah Black

“It was a special night honoring a special team and group of people.”The girls that are playing now looked up to and watched that state finals team. They were huge supporters of that run and it was neat that the current group could hand out those jerseys to them.”

Claywell and Wise

As an added bonus, former Lady Indians scoring leader, Courtney Wise presented the new UC all-time leading scorer, Mariah Claywell with the game ball prior to the varsity tip.

The emotional ceremony set the tone as the current Lady Indian varsity team took the court against Tri-Eastern Conference opponent Union County. Union City held a close lead throughout the first quarter, but pulled away from the Lady Patriots in the second quarter with a 17-3 scoring run.

Union City kept their foot on the gas in the second half to claim a 65-33 TEC victory for the home crowd, with just one home game remaining in the season.

In her first home game back after a knee injury, Emily Livingston recorded a double-double on the night with 19 points and 15 rebounds. UC Scoring Queen, Mariah Claywell added 16 more points to her record, along with 8 boards and 7 assists. Emily Evans was on fire from the 3-point line, draining 5 threes for 15 total points in the win. Freshman guard Oaklee Reichard added 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the Lady Indians.

Coach Black

“I thought the girls played great team ball. They moved the ball well and found one another on numerous occasions as the team assists stats show.”

“We are able to really see what the rotation is going to be now that we finally have our full team back,”

The team is now 13-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play. They will be on the road Thursday for a makeup game with South Adams.
