(11-28-22) Warren John F. Kennedy (14-1) will face New Bremen (12-3) in the 2022 OHSAA Division VII state football championship game in Canton at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on Saturday at 3 p.m.

This past Saturday the Eagles beat Newark Catholic 21-7. While New Bremen in a shoot-out knocked off Lima Central Catholic 42-34 to advance to the final game.

In the state semifinal games…JFK Antonio Smith (Jr) went 62 yards in the 1st quarter for the go-ahead touchdown and set up another with a 40-yard interception return, as the Eagles forced four Newark Catholic turnovers in the fourth quarter to pick up a 21-7 win on Saturday night at Orrville Red Rider Stadium.

The Cardinals ran for 363 yards in its win over LCC, quarterback David Homan had 27 carries for 198 yards and one TD. He also had a big night in the air completing 14 of 18 passes for 213 yards and two TDs.

Tailback Hunter Schaefer added 18 carries for 144 yards and two TDs, including an 80-yard TD.

Warren JFK and New Bremen are meeting in the Division VII title game for the second time in three years. In 2020, New Bremen beat JFK 31-0 to capture the title in its first-ever state final appearance.

New Bremen’s 2022 regular season schedule included eight opponents which advanced to the playoffs.

Kennedy is playing in its seventh title game, winning championships in 1991 and 2016. JFK came up short in title games in 1989, 1992, 2006 and 2020.

The Eagles who are 14-1 on the season, its only loss came on 9-23-22 to Mogadore 28-14.

New Bremen is 12-3 on the season, the Cardinals lost to Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC) rival Delphos St. John’s 14-7 in the last game of the season. In that loss New Bremen played without QB David Homan who had an ankle injury from the week before.

The Cardinals other losses were to MAC football powers Marion Local, who is playing Kirtland in the D VI state final, 38-16 and Coldwater 35-28.
