(2-5-23) Talawanda ended a perfect regular season, 21-0, yesterday beating Cincinnati McNicholas 83-58. The veteran team, led by Hall of Fame Coach Mary Jo Huismann (her 5th season at the school) and two Seniors… Kylee Fears and Taylor Farris. The Braves end the season with back-to-back Southwest Ohio Conference (SWC) titles.

The Braves are ranked 8th in D I in last week’s AP Poll. They will open OHSAA tournament play at the Cincinnati 3 District to be held at Lakota East as the #6 seed. They will play #25 seed Cincinnati Turpin this Saturday at 2pm.

With the win on Saturday Coach Huismann picked up her 757th career coaching win. She has the 2nd most wins in Ohio girls basketball history…Beavercreek High School coach Ed Zink is No. 1 in career wins after having an 810-277 record before he retired in May 2021.
Did you know…

Huismann was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018. As a head coach at Mother of Mercy High School in Cincinnati since the 1972-73 season she had a record of 696-337. That included 17 Greater Cincinnati Championships, 15 District titles and three regionals. The Ohio High School Coaches Association selected her as coach of the year in 1988, 1991 and 1995.
This included 18 Greater Cincinnati Championships, 15 District titles and three regional titles. The Ohio High School Coaches Association selected her as coach of the year in 1988, 1991 and 1995.
She is also a member of the Greater Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame, the Buddy LaRosa High School Sports Hall of Fame and Mother of Mercy Hall of Fame. She also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Women’s Sports Foundation
At the end of the school year in 2018 Mercy and McAuley high schools closed and merged to form a new school, Mercy McAuley High School.
Mercy McAuley named Mount Notre Dame assistant coach Nick Baltimore to be its head basketball coach.
Huismann applied for the Mercy McAuley coaching position but was not hired…a win for Talawanda.
