(4-27-23) For the second time in his coaching career Kirk Comer will step down as Jay County’s girls head basketball coach. Comer was hired the second time in August of 2015, this past season turned out to be his best season leading the Patriots to a 23-2 record.

He was Jay County’s head coach from 2004-09, going 77-31 with one sectional title in his first go-around. After leaving Jay County, Comer coached the Winchester girls squad for two seasons and spent one season as the boys coach at Union City. Before returning to Portland Comer would go 13-13 in his one season at Monroe Central, winning a sectional championship with the Golden Bears.

Comer retires with 400+ career wins, 7 sectional titles, 2 regional titles, and leading Jay County over their ACAC opponents with only two conference losses in 8 seasons and 6 ACAC tournament championships (including the last three).

He led both Union City (2001) and Winchester (twice, 2010 and 2011) into the State semi-state. The 2010 Winchester team was ranked No. 1 for most of the season and finished undefeated.
