HS Baseball: St. Henry, Russia Punch tickets to Akron

(6-5-23) Local baseball rivals, St. Henry and Russia, will travel to Canal Park in Akron this week to play on Thursday in a D IV State Semifinal game.

The two teams played on April 8th with the Raiders winning 6-4.

Russia against other members of St. Henry’s conference, Midwest Athletic Conference (MAC), they went 5-1 losing only to Coldwater on April 14th 3-0.

The Redskins played two schools, members of the Raiders conference, Shelby County Athletic Conference (SCAL) , going 2-0.

St. Henry advanced to the Final Four beating MAC rival Delphos St. John’s in the Regional final 8-5.

The Redskins Drew Schwieterman led the way with a triple, double and 2 runs scored.

After the win St. Henry Coach Mike Gast reflected on the day and a trip to the final to Press Pros Magazine–

“I think as a coaching staff we’ve reflected on this (opportunity). Because there’s a lot of really good coaches out there, and we’re really fortunate to have some really good baseball players at St. Henry – really good athletes. That makes it a lot easier for the coaching staff – makes us a look a lot better. It’s awesome. I’m really excited for our guys, and this program, and this community…knowing that a lot of really good coaches never got this opportunity.”

Russia will try and make it back-to-back State titles, last year they beat Lincolnview in the state final game 10-4.

2022 – Russia Knocks Off Lincolnview 10-4 To Win Ohio D IV State Title

In the Regional final win over Southeastern Local the Raiders were led on offense by Hayden Quinter was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs, one double and one walk. Braylon Cordonnier was 1 for 2 with one walk and one double.

Russia Coach Kevin Philpot told the Sidney Daily News after the win –

“The first five guys in my lineup are the starting guys on the basketball team. Our sixth man was the sixth guy off the bench. These guys went state to state to state in three straight seasons. That says a lot about them all, and our seniors and our upperclassmen. We’ve just got athletes. Not one-sport athletes; they’re just athletes.”
