(7-8-23) In the early years of high school football players around the US were able to put up big scoring numbers. In Ohio it happened in 1923, 100 years ago, when Medina’s Erastus “Tunk” Simmons scored 78 points on 12 touchdowns and 6 extra points in a 165-0 win over Spencer.

Not much background is online about ‘Tunk’, he died on June 25th, 1963 and was inducted into the Medina High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.

According to MaxPreps–the #1 National scoring spot goes to — Leroy ‘Boney’ Matthews who was a 136-pound senior quarterback, he scored 98 points on 14 touchdowns and 14 extra points.

Matthews, who coached football 20 seasons, had a 71-53-7 football record in 13 seasons at Purcell and won three district championships.

In 40 seasons at seven different schools, Boney won 922 games (lost 245 games), played in six state finals and won three titles (1950, 1957 and 1961). All of the championships came at Purcell, where a 28-year career produced a record of 627-176 with only one losing season (11-13 in 1972).

Matthews was at his best once the state playoffs began with his Purcell teams compling a 110-29 playoff record and a 17-8 mark in the state tournament.
