(2-19-24) Wapakoneta wrapped up the overall Western Buckeye League (WBL) title….they won the league tournament outdistancing 2nd place Celina 180.5 -148…St. Marys was a close third with a 144 points. Add to that they won the regular season in dual meets 9-0.

Wapakoneta coach Jason Rostorfer told the Lima News

“If someone would have told me this morning that we were going to score that many points and have six individual champs, I definitely would have taken that. Everybody on the team scored points today. Everybody contributed to the team total. A lot of people consider wrestling an individual sport, but they don’t realize the team aspect of it. We had 13 guys score points (on Saturday). Those young guys who did not get on the (awards) podium, did their job. They scored some points for us, and it adds up.”

Wapakoneta won six individual titles on their way to the tournament title.

Celina Wrestling

Celina Coach James Miracle

I really don’t know how to put today into words, but we are so proud of our team. We had kids battling injuries, kids cutting ten prouds to help the team, others giving up 70 pounds to help and even others saving their best performance for the League tournament.

We expected to finish 4th or 5th today but we were able to place 9 of our 13 wrestlers (we voided 106 to save our girl wrestlers for Sectionals) and all four who didn’t place won enough matches to score us enough points to just edge out St. Mary’s and Van Wert.

To put this finish in perspective, the state expert didn’t have us finishing in the top 3, two fellow coaches I talk to also had us 4th or 5th and we outperformed everyone’s expectation.
