(4-13-24) Recently it was announced that the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) would be moving the state golf championships to different venues across the state.
In the OHSAA press release on the change –
All three venues are under contract for only the 2024 state tournaments. The Ohio State University Golf Club, which has hosted the OHSAA golf state tournaments since 1929 except during renovation years, informed the OHSAA that they are declining the opportunity to host the state tournaments this fall.
SSN sent an email to the Ohio State Athletic Department and asked for a comment on not hosting the event….in an email reply —
Jerry Emig, Associate Athletics Director, Communications — Department of Athletics
Discussions between Ohio State and the OHSAA regarding the OSU Golf Club have been going on for a number of years. The parties agreed last year to take a break from these discussions and renew them in the near future.
The interesting part to the changing of the venues — according to the press release:
In addition, the OHSAA has announced that schools can begin the 2024 golf regular season on Monday, July 29, instead of the previously announced start date of August 1.
Emig also replied to why OSU would not be hosting the track championships…
Ohio State could not host the track and field championships this year. We alerted the OHSAA well in advance that we could not host the event, for this year only, because our surface will need to be replaced after the collegiate season.
The Buckeyes’ outdoor season starts at South Florida (March 15-16) and continues with a pair of relays on March 28-30 (Texas Relays and Raleigh Relays) to end the month. Ohio State also travels to South Carolina (April 6), Florida (April 12-13) and Azuza Pacific (April 12-13) before hosting the annual Jesse Owens Classic (April 19-20). The regular season wraps up at the Penn Relays (April 25-27). The Big 10 championships are scheduled to be held on May 10th. The NCAA first rounds run Wednesday, May 22 through Saturday, May 25. The 2024 NCAA outdoor track and field championships are from Wednesday, June 5 through Saturday, June 8.
The OHSAA track and field state tournament are scheduled to return to Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in 2025 and 2026 to complete the current three-year contract.
High profile state tournaments that used to be played at Ohio State in recent years have moved to other locations….including football, boys and girls basketball and baseball.
