(9-18-24) The Celina City Schools Board of Education and Administrators on Monday night discussed the future of the Bulldogs’ athletic facilities.

Garmann Miller, architects of the building project, made some suggestions on what direction the school needs to consider.

An athletic campus to be located at the northeast of the new high school building.

THE FIELDHOUSE

• The Celina Fieldhouse..the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission would co-fund the abatement and demolition of the field house and education complex building. The state recommends abatement and demolition due to the building’s condition. The school district is not required to do this.

According to Garmann Miller officials it could cost between $978,000 to $1.2 million to keep the Fieldhouse. The estimate does not include any major renovations, enchantments or other upgrades.

FOOTBALL FIELD

• The varsity football field. There are multiple options for the eventual location of the football field. The first is to include it in a proposed track and field facility. This would cost between $2.2 million to $2.58 million and include 3,000 spectator home seats, 1,000 visitor seats, 500 north end-one seats, press box, scoreboard and goal posts.

This cost would come on top of the expense of creating a new track and field complex, which is estimated to be at $2.8 million to $3.5 million.

The other option would be to keep the existing football stadium with the Fieldhouse. Garmann Miller puts the estimated cost at $1.67 million to $1.95 million. This would allow for grandstand repairs, renovating wood bleachers with aluminum seats, etc.

The Fieldhouse would continue to be used for a ticket booth, restrooms, concessions and locker rooms.

Another option for the current football stadium without the Fieldhouse is estimated to be at a cost of between $1.67 million to $1.95 million. New ticket booths, restrooms, concession stands, locker rooms and score board would add another $3.6 million to the bill.

Athletic Support Building

• The Tri Star addition located at the present high school would be to repurpose the structure as an athletic support building with concessions, large group and family restrooms, referee changing room/restroom, wrestling practice room, athletic storage and visitor locker room.

Garmann Miller estimate this cost to be between $1.5 million to $1.9 million..plus other work needed to to make the addition workable…which is estimated at $473,000.

SOCCER FIELD

• The first option is keep play at the existing soccer field location with the cost being estimated at $60,000 to install additional walkways and revise gate locations and the ticket booth.

Another option would be to build a new soccer field west of the existing tennis courts, at a cost to be estimated at between $1.47 million to $1.844 million.

A third option would be to build a new soccer field inside the proposed new track and field. This option would not need a huge investment. One downside is the width of the field would be less than the existing soccer field, but within OHSAA’s recommended regulations.

• Upgrading to artificial field turf at athletic locations would cost upwards of $965,000.

The bids for the new 7th-12th grade facilities are due to be reviewed in October. The discussions will continue on what direction the district will take and what the costs will be.

Did you know…

Hoosier type facilities are some of the oldest remaining active in Ohio High School athletics. The Fieldhouse was built in 1939 and the Stadium was finished in 1941.
