(11-24-24) Yesterday Niles beat South Christian 62-30 and will play Friday, November 29th, for the D4 MHSAA state championship, their first time in a state final game. Niles (12-1) will play Goodrich (12-1) at 12:30 p.m. at Ford Field in Detroit . Goodrich beat Harper Woods, 28-14, in the other MHSAA D4 state semifinal game on Saturday.

Goodrich Senior running back Chase Burnett led the Martians in Saturday’s 28-14 win over Harper Woods. Burnett ran for 123 yards, scored all three of his touchdowns on offense, while on defense he had a sack and an interception in the first half.

Goodrich senior linebacker Colton Roe scored on a 27-yard interception return touchdown in the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter yesterday Senior defensive back Luke Alward went down with a non-contact leg injury and had to be carted off the field.Head coach Tom Alward, Luke’s grandfather, confirmed that the first-team All-Flint Metro League defensive back’s season was over.

Goodrich returns to the MHSAA Division 4 state championship game for the second time in the past three seasons.

Niles Coach Scot Shaw told the South Bend Tribune

“I was worried about stopping them, but they couldn’t stop us. Things just fell into place. We rode (Hess), we rode Sam, Peyton, Talen ― the same guys we’ve been riding all year. Our line up front did fantastic. They controlled the line of scrimmage, and that’s what we said we wanted to do all week.”

Paul Hess led the Vikings with 215 yards on 29 carries and one touchdown, converted three, two-point conversions.

Sam Rucker added 138 yards on 16 attempts, plus a 91 yard kickoff return for a TD.

Niles accumulated 425 rushing yards. Of the 60 offensive plays the Vikings had, 58 were runs.

Missing the game for Niles was Ben Bruckner (PK) who missed the game with an injury saw the Vikings go for the 2-point conversion.
