(2-5-25) In the first ever girls wrestling dual in school history the Celina girls fought tough and won many come from behind matches to win 45-36.

The dual started at 120 pounds and Celina’s Jaidyn Regedanz battled a familiar foe in Isabella Hertenstein who defeated her twice last season. Isabella jumped out to a 10-1 lead late in the first period before Jaidyn scored a reversal to cut the lead to 10-3. Jaidyn would start the second period in the top position and would secure a pin at 2:45 to give the bulldogs a 6-0 lead.
At 125 Celina’s Khilynn Mullett would take the mat against senior Ava Price. Ava was able to secure a takedown and pin in just 44 seconds to tie the score at 6-6.
Senior Melanie Buschor took the mat at 130 against St. Marys senior Danielle Hoskins who was a regional placer last season. The girls were in a tight fought match at 3-1 late in the second when Hoskins secured the pin fall at 3:51 to give the Riders a 12-6 lead.
Junior captain Larissa Jackson (135) evened the score at 12-12 when she pinned Taylor Wallace in 1:34 to notch her 22nd win on the season.
Sophomore Ashton Lehman jumped out to a 7-0 lead early after securing a throw and near pin on Kairi Smith. Kairi battled back in the second with a reversal and nearfall to cut lead to 7-4 in the second. The St. Marys wrestler choose the top position in the third and actually nearly pinned Ashton in the third before Ashton scored her own reversal and four near-fall and almost pin for a 14-7 decision and a 15-12 lead for the green and white.
Freshman Mahalie Elking bumped up from her usual 140 weight class to 145 to help the team and had to battle off her back for over a minute to avoid a certain pin. Mahalie survived via the buzzer and was again put down in the second period (down 7-0) but scored a reversal and pin at 3:31 to increase the lead to 21-12.
Sophomore Stella Standiford also bumped up from her usual spot up to 155 for the betterment of the team to face Addie Wycuff. Stella battled tough and cut the lead down to 7-4 in the second period before Addie secured a pin at 2:51 to cut the lead to 21-18.
Celina coaches decided to void the 170 pound weight class to Mataya Patterson to give St. Mary’s the lead at 21-24.
The move backfired as Katherine Goldsberry dropped a match to Sophia Ellis in the 190 pound class. Katherine had defeated Sophia earlier this year at Tinora, but despite getting the early takedown, she was reversed and pinned at 2:49 to make the score 21-30 for the Riders.
Celina sophomore Lamis Jones represented the Bulldogs at heavyweight and received six points for the bulldogs when St. Marys was void to make the score 27-30.
Natalie Bernholt represented the Dogs at 100 pounds and also received a void to give Celina a short lived lead at 33-30.
At 105 pounds, Celina also made a strategic move and voided to St. Marys senior Amelia’s Serio to give back the lead to the Riders at 33-36.
In the deciding match of the evening at 110 pounds Celina sophomore Ava Kelley (typically 100 pounds but weighed in at 105 for this dual) bumped up one weight to wrestle Iliana Teague in a winner takes all match. Ava secured an early takedown and two sets of four nearfalls before securing the pin at the buzzer for her 25tg win on the season and a 39-36 lead.
Sophomore Jaden Abbey went out at 115 to take the void to end the evening with a home team score of 45 and the visitors 36.
A special thank to all who made the girls feel noticed and to the Boys wrestling team who showed up to cheer them on! Much love guys!
