(2-10-25) The tournament draws are in. The boys have one more week left of regular season play before the marathon that is the OHSAA Boys Basketball State Tournament. Despite how late it is into the season, there are still some big movers in many of the top tens!

D I

Strongsville jumped back into the D I top ten after wins against Mentor and Glenville this past week. The Mustangs replaced Moeller, who fell hard at St. Xavier over the weekend, 46-22. The Crusaders’ win clinches their first GCL South basketball championship since 2021 and their first outright since 2000. One interesting draw is Whitmer playing their first round game at Mentor, followed by a likely date with Brunswick for a trip to the Kent State regional. This is a very winnable draw for the Panthers.

D II

Hoover climbs into the D II top ten after a huge upset win over Louisville, a team that is one of the favorites to win the D III state championship. The Vikings have a clear path to the regional semifinals where they would likely face a 17-1 North Royalton squad. Speaking of regional semis, Lima Senior and Winton Woods are on a collision course to meet in the Elida regional. I also have this uneasy feeling that the OHSAA will have the Elida regional championship face Westerville North in the state semifinals and not at UD Arena. I hope I’m wrong.

D III

The aforementioned upset sees Louisville drop below undefeated Aiken in the latest D III top ten. Looking at the brackets, WBL champion Lima Shawnee should have an easy path to the Toledo regional. There, they will likely face a battle tested Toledo Central Catholic squad in the regional semifinals before the winner gets Lutheran West in the regional final.

D IV

Cincinnati Hills Christian jumped five spots in the D IV rankings following a 76-49 win over Miami Valley Christian this past Tuesday. The Eagles could absolutely make a postseason run where their biggest threat to win their district is Three Rivers Conference champion Northridge. Though, a regional semifinal against 18-2 Wyoming would likely be the end of the line for the Eagles.

D V

Norwayne and Liberty-Benton are the best biggest movers in D V. Going the other direction, Canton Central Catholic tumbles four spots after a pair of weekend losses to Garfield and Hoban. The first semifinal in the Mansfield regional will be a battle with Margaretta, Liberty-Benton, Columbus Academy, and Harvest Prep looking to fill two openings in that contest.

D VI

Two teams moved in the right direction in D VI. Those two teams, Spencerville and Marion Local will face off in Maria Stein on Tuesday in the next great chapter in northwest Ohio basketball. Bluffton takes a tumble after falling to Columbus Grove by double-digits over the weekend.

D VII

Minster made a big statement on the road this past weekend with two 20-plus point wins over New Knoxville and St. Marys. The Wildcats would love a conference win over a formidable Marion Local team this coming weekend as they prepare for the postseason.
