(1-20-26) Yesterday Mark Frey stepped down as Buchanan’s football coach…today Lakeshore announces they have hired him to take over the Lancers program.

[STEVENSVILLE, MI, January 20, 2026] Lakeshore High School is proud to announce the hiring of Mark Frey as the ninth varsity football coach in school history. Coach Frey will look to build on a proud tradition of Lakeshore Football that boasts 27 playoff appearances, 19 conference championships, 10 district championships, five regional championships and five state semi-final appearances.

Coach Frey takes the reins of the Lancer Football Program after a very successful seven year run at the helm of the Buchanan Bucks. While at Buchanan, he guided the Bucks to a 41-27 record and five playoff appearances. Mark boasts a 100% graduation rate for players that played four years in the football program. His Buck teams won three conference championships, and he was voted the MHSFCA Region Coach of the Year in 2020 and 2022. During his tenure, Buchanan beat their archrival Brandywine six out of eight times. His teams were named academic all-state five times and finished top four in the state once. In his seven years at Buchanan, Coach Frey grew the program from 27 players to over 60 players.

Before coaching at Buchanan, he served as the head coach for five seasons at Riverdale High School in Ohio. Coach Frey also coached the wide receivers, tight ends, secondary, and kickers at Ohio Northern University from 2013-2014, cornerbacks, kickers and punters at Dordt College from 2012-2013, and cornerbacks, kickers and tight ends at Concord High School in Indiana from 2011-2012.

During his coaching career, Frey has developed 102 all-conference players, 25 all-region players, seven all-state players, six DI/DII scholarship players, 23 academic all-state players, developed a secondary that finished 10th in the nation in interceptions at Ohio Northern University in 2013 and developed 2nd round NFL draft pick Jason Springs.

Coach Frey, received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from Hanover College in 2011 where he was a two sport athlete in football and lacrosse. He earned his secondary teaching certificate from Dordt College in 2012 and his Masters of Arts in Education Administration from Findlay University in 2018.
