(8-7-26) Private schools from both the Alabama High School Athletic Association and Alabama Independent Schools Association met Friday at the Cramton Bowl Multiplex in Montgomery to discuss a possible new high school athletic association.
Representatives from the Alabama Independent School Association (AISAA) and 89 of 93 private schools in the AHSAA were present at the meeting that had more than 150 people in attendance.
Friday’s meeting was the first time since the AHSAA split public and private schools in postseason play back in January where AHSAA private schools had a legitimate option outside of the AHSAA.
Macon-East Montgomery headmaster and football coach Glynn Lott is spearheading the push for a new association with a goal of starting for the 2027-2028 school year. Lott has created the Gulf States Independent Athletic Association (GSIAA).

The inaugural season for the GSIAA would include the current members of the AISA and any AHSAA teams that decide to make the jump. The organizational structure of the new association will include a Board of Control, an executive director and committees that report to both. At the top of the structure will be a Member Assembly, which will provide a vote to each member school. Amending bylaws or changes within the group would require a two-thirds approval.
