One week.

For some teams, Week 10 will be the difference between earning a bye and having to play the following week. For others, it will determine whether they open the postseason at home or spend Friday afternoon on a bus traveling halfway across Ohio.

And for some, Week 10 will determine whether there is a Week 11 at all.

Before we get to the divisions, a huge thank you to Drew Pasteur, whose Fantastic 50 site is an incredible resource for this column and just about anything involving the Ohio high school football postseason.

An absolute legend in Ohio high school football.

DIVISION I

The Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division will be decided in Week 10 when Olentangy heads down the road to face Olentangy Berlin.

Both teams are a perfect 4-0 in division play, but one is also playing for its postseason life.

Olentangy currently sits 14th in the Region 3 Harbin standings. A win for the Braves would not only clinch the division title, but likely push them into the postseason field.

And having won four of their past five games, Olentangy is hot enough to upset somebody’s apple cart if it gets into the first round.

DIVISION II

There are a couple of potential spoilers sitting on the Division II bubble who could cause problems if they make it to Week 11.

Massillon Perry heads to GlenOak as a heavy favorite. The problem is that beating a one-win Golden Eagles team isn’t going to generate much help in the Harbin standings. The Panthers need to take care of business and hope a few results elsewhere fall their way.

Warren G. Harding has the opposite problem in Region 5.

The Raiders currently sit 12th — the final postseason position — but enter Week 10 as underdogs against No. 7 (D-I) Austintown-Fitch.

An upset of the Falcons would all but secure Harding a postseason berth. Even with a loss, however, there is still a path into Week 11.

The Raiders may spend Friday night playing one game and watching several others.

DIVISION III

Maple Heights has experienced a wild ride of a season, but with one week remaining, the Mustangs control their own postseason destiny.

Maple Heights hosts Gilmour Academy on Senior Night with a playoff berth hanging in the balance.

One team watching closely will be Benedictine.

The Bengals head south to face one-win St. Vincent-St. Mary. Benedictine’s open date in Week 8 may ultimately come back to hurt, but there is nothing the Bengals can do about that now.

Take care of business Friday.

Then hope Gilmour Academy can throw them a lifeline.

DIVISION IV

Region 15 might be the most geographically ridiculous — and competitively loaded — region in the state.

It stretches from the West Virginia panhandle through central Ohio and south toward Waverly. More importantly, 17 teams in the region currently have winning records.

Somebody good is going to be left out.

Fairfield Union enters Week 10 in a must-win situation. The Falcons host 7-2 Hamilton Township while trying to extend a four-game winning streak.

Union Local is in an even more precarious position after last week’s upset loss at Bellaire.

The Jets are squarely on the bubble and now have to travel to No. 9 (D-V) Barnesville to face the undefeated Shamrocks.

Win, and Union Local is in.

Lose, and the Jets become very interested observers of everything else happening around Region 15.

DIVISION V

Manchester returned to the Top 15 this week just in time to find itself fighting for its postseason life.

After an 0-3 start, the Panthers have gone on a tear, including wins over Fairless and seven-win Orrville this month.

Now comes the biggest game yet.

Manchester travels to 7-2 Canal Fulton Northwest in Week 10. A win over the Indians would secure a postseason berth.

A loss wouldn’t necessarily eliminate the Panthers, but they would need several dominoes to fall their way elsewhere.

Considering how Manchester has played over the second half of the season, this is exactly the kind of team nobody wants sneaking into the bottom of a playoff bracket.

DIVISION VI

Versailles opened the season by upsetting Harvest Prep, handed Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy its only loss of the season, and then ran headfirst into the meat grinder that is its schedule.

Now the 6-3 Tigers need a win over 6-3 Anna or risk being left out of the postseason entirely.

Versailles might be the most dangerous bubble team on this list.

The Tigers own the second-best power rating in Region 24, trailing only St. Henry — a team that beat Versailles 34-21 in the conference opener.

A win Friday would add one more dangerous piece to an already loaded Region 24 puzzle featuring St. Henry, Anna, Mechanicsburg and Tri-Village.

If Versailles gets in, nobody is going to be excited about seeing the Tigers waiting in their portion of the bracket.

DIVISION VII

It seems almost absurd that Wayne Trace can be 6-3 and still enter Week 10 on the playoff bubble.

The explanation is pure Harbin math.

Three of the Raiders’ six wins have come against winless teams. Wayne Trace still receives credit for those victories, but those opponents provide no second-level wins to boost the Raiders’ total.

That leaves very little margin for error.

Wayne Trace travels to 7-2 Sherwood Fairview on Friday. A win clinches a postseason spot. A loss means the Raiders will spend the rest of the night watching results such as Hilltop at North Central and hoping for help.

And Wayne Trace is exactly why nobody wants to dismiss the teams sitting near the cut line.

The Raiders are a scrappy group capable of giving teams such as Gibsonburg, Edon or Pandora-Gilboa a miserable first-round matchup.

First, though, they have to get there.
