(10-25-26) Of the 131 at-large teams that got in with losing records, 79 played Friday night — and they went a combined 21-58. The other 52 play today.
• 4-5 teams: 16-24
• 3-6 teams: 4-23
• 2-7 teams: 1-11
The night’s biggest stunner: Rolling Meadows, in at 2-7 as the lowest seed (excited to be playing another week of football, in the state playoffs as the 384th and final team selected.) in the whole 6A field, knocked off 6-3 Addison Trail 34-26. All told, losing-record teams pulled off 10 wins over winning-record opponents — Washington (3-6) beat 6-3 Mascoutah 35-28 on the road, Waterloo (4-5) held off 6-3 Taylorville 34-28 after leading 28-3 at halftime, Wheaton St. Francis (4-5) routed 5-4 Grayslake North 61-6, and Red Hill (4-5) shut out 5-4 Cumberland 12-0.
The other Friday winners mostly beat fellow at-large teams — Carlinville 35, Riverton 28; Stillman Valley 32, Reed-Custer 31 (winner scored with under a minute left); Yorkville 41, Palatine 14; St. Charles East (3-6) 42, Elk Grove (4-5) 21.
And it was brutal for a lot of the rest: Hillcrest blanked Noble/Johnson 63-0, Cahokia blanked East Peoria 47-0, and Metamora rolled Alton Marquette 56-7.
