(8-17-17) The RPS 205 (Rockford, Illinois) school system girls co-op golf team won the Rockford Country Club Invitational yesterday beating two NIC 10 Conference rivals, 44 strokes ahead of Hononegah and 46 ahead of Boylan.
The co-op team features all four RPS 205 schools with a combined 2017 total enrollment 0f 7,212. The co-op team features 40% of the conference membership.
Since the team started play in 2013 it has won one conference title, two state titles and produced one individual state champion (Madasyn Pettersen).
How it all started:
Kaylin Janicke a member of the first co-op team in 2013 told the Rockford Register-Star:
“It’s definitely more fun not being the only one anymore. Girls golf is slowly diminishing, so it feels to get it back up and out there.
Hopefully, we can keep getting even more girls and one day every school can have their own team.”
Co-op Coach Ben Mena said in 2013 “going to really hit up the middle schools” to get a bigger team next year.
In 2013 they started with seven players, this season they have seven players. If the goal was to have all four schools with their own girls golf team, that does not seem to be in the future of RPS 205.
Two other conference members also have a girls golf team co-op, Belvidere and Belvidere North, they have a combined enrollment of 2,771. That means the other five members have their own teams.
How does it work in Illinois:
Interesting to note that the most recent NIC 10 constitution does not mention the acceptance of co-op teams to compete for conference title, although several other sports also have co-op teams competing.
Is there a problem or issue with a co-op system that allows four large schools to combine to form one team?
A co-op team needs Illinois High School Association and conference approval and it needs to be renewed every two years. The NIC 10 handles this issue before the state has the paperwork forwarded to consider the matter. With four of the ten members being RPS 205 schools it gives them a lot of ‘power’ in determining the direction of conference issues.
