(9-30-17) – Two new members will be entering the Celina High School Athletic Hall of Fame this year, Betsy (Hellwarth) Rolfes and Mick Gabes.
Mick Gabes, who was a very big part of the Bulldog football coaching staff during the glory years of the Jerry Harris era, will be one of the new members enshrined into the HOF sometime during the upcoming boys basketball season. Gabes, who passed away in February of 2013, was instrumental in starting and the development of Celina’s Applied Physiology and Science courses. Thanks to his efforts many Celina students would go on to have very successful careers in the health related positions.
Gabes, who retired from Celina Schools, was also an Assistant Varsity Swim Team Coach. During his teaching career he taught at Lima Senior, Lima South Jr. High, Steubenville and Buckeye North School districts.
Betsy (Hellwarth) Rolfes who was a multiple sport star, including being the all-time goal scorer in girls soccer when she graduated in 2003.
Rolfes also played basketball for the Bulldogs:
Former Celina girls basketball coach and assistant coach Brian Stetler, said this about the newest member of the Hall of Fame:
I had the privilege to be one of Betsy’s coaches during her high school basketball career. She was tremendously athletic and smart which makes for a great combination on the basketball court and soccer field. In addition Betsy’s work ethic was second to none which provided strong leadership to her teammates and helped her basketball team reach the regional finals her sophomore season. Betsy always had a positive attitude and came ready to play each practice as well as each game. It’s not surprising that Betsy has gone on to have a successful career, marriage and family. Being inducted into the Celina High School Athletic Hall of Fame is certainly deserved by this fine student/athlete.
During her Senior Year Rolfes was a member of the Homecoming Court.
Betsy is married to Celina graduate Jared Rolfes, who was a former Celina Head Football Coach and now is in Greensboro, NC where he is the Head Football Coach at Page High School.
